I recently went to watch the London Marathon to experience one of the city’s most well-known events as a spectator. And as well as seeing London and Londoners in a completely different light (see upcoming blog ‘Marathon pt2’ for more on that), it was also wonderful to see so many people running and for their chosen charities too. And all of them were very much running their own race. Some people just wanted to finish, others wanted to beat their personal best and a select few wanted to break records.
However different the reasons were for running in the marathon, each person did it at their own pace and in their own way. The fancy dress costumes of course have now become an integral part of the race these days, and this year, among many weird and wonderful outfits, I saw three rhinos. Not often you see that in London!
Runners were focusing on how they themselves were running, where they were going and how they could keep going to the finish. It can be helpful to compare ourselves to other people from time to time as long as we keep in mind that what we are all aiming for can be different. On marathon day, everybody was running a different race because everybody had their own ambitions and goals. They were running their own race. How are you running yours?
